City of Kannapolis

Kannapolis is a city in transition, with more than 40,000 residents, it is moving away from its history of textile manufacturing to a future in technology.  (see map)

Today, the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) is re-making Kannapolis as a "new city for a new century." The $1.5 billion campus is the legacy of billionaire David H. Murdock, owner and CEO of Dole Foods. NCRC will be the most advanced campus for biotechnology and nutrition research in the world.

Currently home to eight universities, and several private fims such as Lab Corp of America, Red Hat Software, and Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, NCRC is scheduled to be completed within the next five years.  It is expected that jobs on the research campus will reach over 5,000 by the year 2013.

Other major industries in Kannapolis include racing-related businesses and wharehouse/distribution. Stewart-Haas Racing has a 140,000 square foot race shop located here and Stanley Tools, Shoe Show and Novant Health have major distribution centers in the community.

Kannapolis is an emerging business hub and the focus for of science-related business in the Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord metropolitan area.
