Concord, N.C. — The Cabarrus Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Gretchen Carson as its new President and CEO. Carson brings more than a decade of leadership experience in economic development, business recruitment, and industry retention across the Charlotte region.
Carson most recently served as Director of Business Recruitment at the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, where she led efforts to attract new opportunities and investment to the Charlotte region. She previously developed and managed the existing-industry program for Mecklenburg County, building the county’s first structured retention initiative and supporting projects that generated over $100 million in capital investment and nearly 500 jobs.
“Joining the CEDC and returning to local economic development feels like coming home — an opportunity to make a real impact on the quality of life in Cabarrus County, its communities, and its residents,” said Carson. “I look forward to working closely with our talented staff and dedicated community partners to drive meaningful, collaborative progress.”
Carson’s background also includes business expansion and industry support roles in Union County, NC—building her expertise across multiple sectors and communities within the region.
“We are pleased to welcome Gretchen to Cabarrus County,” said Steve Fisher, EDC Board Chair and CEO of F&M Bank. “Her extensive experience in retention and recruitment, her strong regional relationships, and her track record of delivering meaningful economic growth make her exceptionally well-suited to lead the Cabarrus EDC into its next chapter. She also brings a deep commitment to partnering on workforce development, which is essential to our community’s continued success.”
Since December 2024, retired Concord City Manager Brian Hiatt has served as President/CEO, working alongside staff to manage projects. The Cabarrus EDC Board commended him for his exemplary leadership in this interim role.
Carson will begin her role on January 5, 2026.
