Where did you grow up and what’s one thing from your hometown that still influences you today?
I grew up in Morgantown, WV – home to West Virginia University. Universities are home to a great deal of diversity and openness towards people from other places. I learned at an early age that people come from all walks of life and each person has something unique to share.
What did you study in school and how did that education shape your career path?
I have a B.S. in French and Art History from Indiana University (go Hoosiers!) and a B.S.B.A in International Business from UNC Charlotte (go Niners!). I have always had an affinity for languages (I also studied German when I was young) and knew I wanted to use that in my profession. Teaching and translation were not for me, so I decided to layer in an international business degree – both have served me well in positions working for the French American Chamber of Commerce of the Carolinas, the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, and broadly in economic development.
What’s one fun fact about you that most people don’t know?
I lived in Wallonia, Belgium (the Frensh speaking half of the country) as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student right after graduating from high school. I do still speak French (a bit rusty!), but with an American accent on a Belgian accent. For those who know the Rotary exchange program, I still have my jacket with all the pins I collected from other exchange students!
What was your most interesting job experience so far and why?
Touring the manufacturing facilities and learning how things are produced – and about all the different everyday items that are created right in our backyards! I have met with manufacturers that make the drums for Maroon 5 and the nozzle that sprays the “m” onto M&M’s, others that make the molds to produce the red basket of the Target carts and ones that make the packaging for companies like KFC. It is fascinating to learn that all of this and so much more is made right here in this region. I can’t wait to discover all the things made in Cabarrus!
What’s one thing you’re most looking forward to exploring in Cabarrus County?
The people and the communities – they are what make Cabarrus County what it is. The culture of the community is so important. I might also add that I love good food, so I am open to any suggestions on the best places to eat – and any places that have delicious chocolate of any kind. I can’t say no to chocolate!
What’s one lesson you picked up along the way that still guides how you lead today?
My father was an HR administrator for a hospital, and he knew every person in that hospital by name. In many instances, he also knew their spouse or partner and children’s names. I learned from him the importance of making people feel seen and recognized.
If you had a free Saturday with no meetings, how would you spend it?
First and foremost, sleeping in! I am not a morning person. But I will get up on a Saturday to go hiking with my husband and two boys in the mountains. I love to do what I call waterfall hikes – we have hiked to 28 different waterfalls in western NC. After a day of hiking, curling up on the couch with a book, puzzle or movie!
What’s your go-to way to recharge after a busy week?
I love to make sure I get in a good walk around my neighborhood in the evening when everything has calmed down (excluding during winter when it’s too cold and dark). I especially love this in the spring when everything is coming back to life in vibrant colors, the days are longer and warmer. And, when the occasion allows, getting together with some of my close friends for an evening out. Maybe also a glass of bubbles – I’m a firm believer that champagne should not be reserved for just the special occasions!
What made you excited to say “yes” to Cabarrus EDC?
I was thrilled to have the opportunity to say yes to Cabarrus EDC as it offered an opportunity to return to my roots in local economic development work. I began in Union County and loved the work that allowed the EDO to support companies in the community. The behind-the-scenes work often involves helping existing companies that provide jobs in the community to thrive, which is near and dear to me.
