James Carter joined the Cabarrus Economic Development Corporation in August 2026 as the new Business Retention and Entrepreneurship Manager! Take a moment to get to know him beyond the title—fun facts, favorite things, and what he’s most excited about as he steps into this role here in Cabarrus County.

What was your previous job and how do you think it prepared you for this new position?

I previously worked for the City of Charlotte’s Economic Development Department. That role gave me experience with the many different aspects of economic development that local government can influence, including public-private partnerships, entrepreneurship and workforce development.

It prepared me for this position by giving me the opportunity to oversee important community-based initiatives that required both internal and external support. I’m excited to bring that experience to Cabarrus County and continue building relationships that help businesses and entrepreneurs thrive.

Where did you grow up and what’s one thing from your hometown that still influences you today?

I grew up in Eden, NC, a rural community north of Greensboro. Growing up in Eden taught me the importance of community, and that lesson still influences me today.

What did you study in school and how did that education shape your career path?

I studied public administration at Elon University as an undergraduate. My education helped me better understand the role government can play in improving the quality of life for its citizens.

Since graduating in 2014, I have been on a steady career path focused on improving the lives of residents in whatever community I serve.

What’s one fun fact about you that most people don’t know?

I’m a non-singer who loves to sing!

What was your most interesting job experience so far and why?

My most interesting job experience so far was serving as a Public Policy Intern for the International Economic Development Council. It was fascinating to see how the federal government influences the economic development landscape and how practitioners have to be nimble and ready to respond.

What’s one thing you’re most looking forward to exploring in Cabarrus County?

I love discovering new restaurants and finding those places that become regular favorites, so I’m most looking forward to exploring the local dining options throughout Cabarrus County.

If you had a free Saturday with no meetings, how would you spend it?

I’d spend it binge-watching shows and movies from my Prime Video queue.

What made you excited to say “yes” to Cabarrus EDC?

The positive energy of the EDC staff and Gretchen’s leadership made me excited to say “yes” to Cabarrus EDC! I’m looking forward to being part of the team and supporting businesses and entrepreneurs throughout Cabarrus County.
