Preparing for What’s Next: Student TRACK Brings Careers into Focus

For many high school students, the question “What’s next for me?” can be daunting. Whether unsure about career options or headed down a path that may not be the best fit, students often struggle to see the full range of possibilities that exist close to home.

That’s where Student TRACK (Talent Readiness and Career Knowledge) comes in. Designed for rising juniors in Cabarrus County’s public, charter, and private high schools, this immersive program introduces students to real-world career paths, local industries, and the skills necessary to succeed in them—no matter if their goals include a four-year degree, two-year associate degree, or industry certification.

Previously known as the Youth Career Leadership Institute and administered by Cabarrus County Government, the program is now led by the Cabarrus Economic Development Corporation to strengthen connections between students and local industries.

As part of their TRACK experience, students recently took part in several full day hands-on visits to City of Concord and Cabarrus County government agencies throughout the summer. These visits gave students a behind-the-scenes look at the critical roles public servants play in everything from public safety and emergency services to engineering, information technology, finance, and city planning. They learned how these departments work together to serve residents and how diverse skill sets—from data analysis to mechanical trades—are vital to running a thriving community.

“Student TRACK is about exposure and empowerment,” said Stephanie Burleson, Business Support Manager with the Cabarrus EDC and coordinator for the program this year. “When students see real jobs in action and meet the people doing them, they begin to understand what’s possible for their own futures. We want every student to know that there are great opportunities right here in Cabarrus County—and that there’s more than one path to a successful, fulfilling career.”

Students left with a deeper appreciation for local government and a clearer understanding of the career options available to them—many of which they hadn’t previously considered. They also gained insight into how internships, apprenticeships, and certifications can open doors to meaningful careers right here in Cabarrus County.

Student TRACK doesn’t just prepare students for a job—it prepares them for a future they can envision.

Applications for the next cohort will be available through each high school’s guidance office. Encourage your student to apply and start exploring what’s next.
