Atlantic Fish Co. Secures Funding from North Carolina Biotechnology Center

Atlantic Fish Co., an innovative developer of cultivated seafood targeting carbon-intensive, overfished species, has secured a $100,000 Small Business Research loan through the Emerging Company Development loan program of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBiotech).

Founded in 2020, Atlantic Fish Co. is dedicated to providing the world with delicious and sustainable protein, and is taking significant strides toward creating a future that champions the welfare of people, animals, and the planet. This funding from NCBiotech is a testament to the company’s promising trajectory and the growing recognition of North Carolina as an emergent hub for alternative protein ventures.

“We’re looking forward to Atlantic Fish progressing in their development of novel cultivated seafood products,” said Jen Greenstein, senior director, investments, NCBiotech. “This could help lift supply constraints on finfish resistant to aquaculture practices, enabling increased volumes without causing overfishing or affecting ocean biodiversity. The Biotech Center and our loan program supports growth of the company and the cellular agriculture industry in North Carolina.”

NCBiotech’s Emerging Company Development loan program is designed to propel early-stage life science companies across North Carolina by helping them achieve significant research and commercial milestones. Historically, for every dollar invested by NCBiotech, an average of $148 in follow-on funding has been attracted, through avenues like government grants, venture capital investments, and strategic partnerships.

“North Carolina has been an exceptional place for the genesis and growth of Atlantic Fish Co.,” remarked Doug Grant, CEO of Atlantic Fish Co. “This investment not only validates our mission but also spotlights the state’s burgeoning reputation as a nexus for alternative protein innovations.”

Atlantic Fish Co. has partnered with the North Carolina Food Innovation Lab in Kannapolis to develop its first marketable product, planned for testing in the first quarter of 2024.
